Putting off a scheduled car service might seem like an easy way to save money, particularly when household budgets are tight. However, Bass Coast Mechanical & Towing Service is seeing more vehicles arriving overdue for servicing, and delaying routine maintenance can allow relatively minor problems to develop into expensive repairs.

One recent example involved a vehicle that was 10,000 kilometres overdue for its scheduled service. During the inspection, the brake pads had deteriorated so severely that they had effectively fallen away from the braking assembly. This left the brake caliper pistons becoming the contact surface against the brake disc.

The result was far more serious than simply needing a new set of brake pads. The pistons, brake caliper and disc rotor were damaged, requiring the affected brake assembly to be replaced. The brake system also needed a complete fluid flush and testing before the vehicle could safely return to the road.

Your brake pads are designed to wear gradually while providing friction against the brake discs or rotors. As the friction material becomes thinner, it eventually reaches a point where replacement is necessary.

If worn pads are left unchecked, the friction material can deteriorate or disappear completely. Metal components can then contact the disc, creating excessive heat, scoring and potentially damaging other brake components.

This is where a relatively straightforward brake pad replacement can become a much more expensive repair.

Regular servicing gives technicians the opportunity to inspect brake pad thickness, discs, callipers, brake fluid, hoses and other related components before deterioration becomes severe. It can also identify problems that may not yet be obvious to the driver.

Why Regular Servicing Helps Protect Your Brakes

Brake deterioration is not only about repair costs. Reduced braking performance, damaged components or contaminated brake fluid can affect how safely a vehicle stops, particularly during emergency braking.

For drivers around Cowes and the Bass Coast, vehicles may also experience long-distance travel, holiday traffic, winding roads and changing weather conditions. These are not ideal circumstances for discovering that your brakes have been neglected.

An unusual but important fact is that brake pads can sometimes deteriorate significantly before a driver notices an obvious change in pedal feel. Regular inspection is therefore important even when the car appears to be driving normally.

Delayed servicing can create safety risks

Following your manufacturer's recommended servicing schedule helps keep important safety systems inspected and maintained. If your service is already overdue, don't assume that catching up can wait.

Bass Coast Mechanical & Towing Service also recommends booking a pre-trip safety inspection before long road trips, particularly if your vehicle has missed a scheduled service.

As an independently owned Repco Authorised Service centre member, Bass Coast Mechanical & Towing Service can help keep your vehicle safe, reliable and ready for the kilometres ahead.

Delayed Car Servicing & Brake Damage | Bass Coast Mechanical & Towing Service

Skipping a Service Can Cost More Than You Think: When Delayed Servicing Damages Your Brakes

Brake fluid plays a crucial role in the safety of your vehicle by transferring the pressure you apply to the brake pedal to the actual brakes. Without it, your brakes simply wouldn’t function, and as everyone knows, a car without brakes is incredibly dangerous. Even slightly compromised brakes can pose a serious risk.

Brake fluid has a tendency to absorb moisture over time, which can compromise its effectiveness. Brake systems generate high temperatures, and brake fluid is specifically designed to have a high boiling point to prevent it from evaporating. However, when too much moisture builds up, the boiling point is lowered, making the fluid more prone to boiling under heat. This can lead to reduced brake fluid levels, ultimately affecting your vehicle’s braking performance and increasing stopping distances.

Why Is Brake Fluid Replacement Necessary?

In addition to reducing effectiveness, moisture-contaminated brake fluid can lead to corrosion within the braking system. Over time, this can damage components such as the callipers, wheel cylinders, and anti-lock braking systems (ABS). Regular replacement helps to extend the lifespan of these parts and maintain optimal braking performance.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it actively absorbs moisture from the surrounding environment, even through microscopic openings in the brake system. This is why regular maintenance is essential to ensure safety.

Your vehicle’s manufacturer will specify how often the brake fluid should be replaced—typically outlined in the logbook service schedule. At Bass Coast Mechanical & Towing Service, we recommend replacing it every two years as a general guideline. However, it’s equally important to have it checked during each routine service. A professional mechanic can assess the moisture content in the fluid and check for any leaks or other signs of wear that might require earlier attention.

How Often Should Brake Fluid Be Replaced?

Yes, at Bass Coast Mechanical & Towing Service, we provide a comprehensive 65-point vehicle inspection upon request with every full service. This includes a detailed review of your brake fluid, master cylinder, front and rear discs and pads, callipers, cylinders, and more. Our expert mechanics will assess the condition of your braking system and notify you if the brake fluid needs replacing or if any additional brake system repairs or maintenance are required. Regular checks can catch problems early, ensuring your safety on the road.

Maintaining your brake fluid is an essential part of car ownership, and neglecting it could lead to costly repairs or, worse, compromised safety. If you’re due for a brake fluid replacement or simply want peace of mind, book a service with Bass Coast Mechanical & Towing Service in Cowes. Our team will make sure your braking system is in top condition, so you can drive with confidence.

Brake Fluid: What It Is and Why It Matters

Brake Fluid: What Is It and Why Do You Need It?

Do you drive an Automatic vehicle? Then you might not even be aware that there is a clutch in your vehicle. Without it, the gears in your car will not change.

Bass Coast Mechanical & Towing Service in Cowes know all about repairing and servicing these systems including clutches, cables and fluids. Learn more below.

The clutch is one of the most important elements of your vehicles driving operation. Your engine is what causes your wheels to spin, but what happens when your car needs to stop? The engine shouldn't stop spinning but the wheels need to. It's the clutch that allows this to happen. The clutch allows the transfer of power from the engine to the wheels to be interrupted while a gear is being changed or while the car is stationary and the engine continues to run.

Some vehicles have hydraulic clutches - when you press the clutch pedal, the clutch fluid moves the pressure from the pedal through to the clutch and disengages the power transmission. Leaking clutch fluid can cause all kinds of problem in your vehicle so it is very important to monitor it regularly. At Bass Coast Mechanical & Towing Service in Cowes we check your clutch fluid, hydraulic system or clutch cables for you in the course of our free 65 Point Vehicle Inspection - which you can request as part of every car service.

You should have your clutch inspected if:

What signs to look for if your clutch is not performing

You notice a burnt ‘toast' or ‘burning rubber' smell in your car, or smoke from under vehicle

Your vehicle is slipping out of gear for no reason

Your clutch is not disengaging fully, or your clutch is sticking or shuddering

If your clutch is showing any of the problems above - it could mean any number of faults. Clutch problems are difficult to diagnose by symptoms alone because many issues cause the same symptoms, depending on the vehicle and type of engine. The best way to deal with clutch shuddering, slipping or noise is contact your local mechanics at Bass Coast Mechanical & Towing Service today.

We can perform clutch diagnostics, service and repairs on most makes and models right here in our Cowes workshop.

As electric vehicles (EVs) become more popular, so does the need to understand the unique requirements they bring to car maintenance. At Bass Coast Mechanical & Towing Service in Cowes, we’re proud to provide Tyre and Wheel Services for EVs and helping drivers make informed choices about their vehicles. One of the most important considerations for any EV owner is the tyres. Why? Because they play a crucial role in handling, safety, and efficiency, especially for electric vehicles, which have different demands compared to traditional petrol or diesel cars.

Choosing the right tyre is not just about performance but also about safety and longevity. This is why Bass Coast Mechanical & Towing Service stocks a range of premium Kuhmo EV tyres that are specifically designed for electric cars, including popular models like Tesla, MG, and BYD. But what exactly makes EV tyres different? Read on to learn more.

When it comes to tyres, EVs have specific needs that differ significantly from standard petrol or diesel vehicles. Here are some of the key differences:

Differences Between EV Tyres and Standard Tyres

Handling Heavier Loads: EVs are typically heavier than standard cars due to the weight of their batteries. This means their tyres need to be designed to handle a much greater load. Regular tyres are not built for this, which can lead to faster wear and reduced safety. EV tyres are reinforced with stronger materials to provide durability and support for the heavier weight.

Specialised Tread Patterns: Another key difference is the tread pattern. EV tyres often feature advanced designs that help minimise road noise – an important factor for EVs, as they lack the engine noise of traditional cars to mask tyre sounds. These tread patterns also reduce rolling resistance (or drag), which helps improve efficiency and allows you to get more mileage out of each charge.

Improved Mileage and Longevity: EV tyres are engineered to provide better mileage and a longer lifespan. With their unique construction, they can better withstand the high torque output of EVs, which can otherwise accelerate tyre wear in standard tyres.

In short, the differences between EV tyres and standard car tyres lie in their ability to manage weight, reduce noise, improve efficiency, and last longer. At Bass Coast Mechanical & Towing Service, we can help you choose the perfect tyre for your EV to ensure optimal performance and safety.

When you think about it, tyres are the only part of your vehicle that makes contact with the road. This makes them critical for ensuring safety, performance, and efficiency. However, we often see EV owners delaying regular tyre maintenance, and this can lead to serious issues.

Because EVs are heavier and deliver more torque to the wheels, their tyres experience a higher level of wear and tear compared to standard vehicles. Worn or improperly maintained tyres not only reduce efficiency but also compromise your safety on the road. Poor grip, longer braking distances, and an increased risk of blowouts are just a few of the problems that can arise when tyres are not in good condition.

At Bass Coast Mechanical & Towing Service, we always recommend that EV owners take tyre maintenance seriously. This includes regular checks for wear and tear, ensuring tyres are inflated to the correct pressure, and rotating them as needed. If uneven wear is found then we can perform wheel alignments and balancing for maximum performance. By keeping your tyres in top shape, you’ll enjoy a smoother, safer, and more efficient driving experience.
